This is a sped up workflow of a digital blending image editing process which is hands down the best way of creating HDR images, even though it may just be the most time consuming method out there. If you want to ahcieve natural looking photos of scenes that had very high dynamic range of tones, then digital blending is the way to go. Using automation such as Photomatix or HDR efex pro 2 from Nik / Google is great but you will never achieve such precise and controllable effect as you will when you spend some time blending multiple exposures manually in photoshop.
