Serkworks Art Labs Artcasters 165-Encouragement & Tough Love/Gazbot/Cory Kerr

  1. Pete Marquez: Good advice as usual guys. I didn't think it came across as "aggressive" because I didn't take any of it personally. It's the truth, take it or leave it. If you're willing to listen to it and learn something from it you're only gonna help yourself. I think generally speaking most folks can benefit from this. You're not gonna please every single person out there, especially those more concerned about their feelings. No thanks, I'd rather learn and improve. I can relate to one personal story that was recounted. Back when I was around 12 or 13 I drew what I thought was the most awesome drawing of John Byrne's Aurora from Alpha Flight. I had copied it by looking at my comic, I showed it to my mom and she said "the eyes are crooked." I was shattered and angry but kept drawing, just didn't show her anymore. Decades later I accidentally came across that drawing again. She was right, one eye was WAY lower than where it should have been. I've shared this story with my boys that are beginning to draw as a way of explaining that if I offer criticism it's to improve them not to discourage them. Of course I'm very careful with how I say it. So thanks to all three of you for sharing. Sorry I missed it live...
  2. Rory Herman: Awesome Video, is it too late to get in on the anthology?
  3. Darris D. Armstrong: Hi guys, loved this video. This is just such a wonderful community you all have built. I just have a few questions about the challenge. Right now, i'm currently working on a webcomic called D_consequences, to which I post and promote a lot on my social media. Would it be ok to promote D_consequences as well as Mech Boy which is my 100days challenge project as well? (Like meaning as a separate promotion)? Or do I only have to promote Mech Boy for the 100 days? It's easy for me to update on Instagram and Twitter, but it's sometimes tough to make videos. So i'm working on that part.
  4. Rory Herman: +Serkworks Art Labs thanks, is there a place to post progress or would i just post on my own youtube channel?
  5. cetriya's Art n Comics Channel: maybe cause I'm stubborn/ hard head I don't get peoples need for 'sandwiched' critiques? I only ask for proper constructive critque with actual solutions and not just nit picking 'technical' things that will correct them selves over time.
  6. Serkworks Art Labs: True Cetriya, but I don't think its the person being critiqued that wants the advice to be sandwiched, I just think it's a nice thing for the critiquer to do.
  7. Serkworks Art Labs: The way I understand it is you have to be posting your 100s somewhere online once there is evidence of this you can direct the Facebook group to where your posting and the mods will allow you to goin the group. I imagine if you are working on twi comics at the same time you can promote them both as long as you continue to be taking the challenge.
  8. Serkworks Art Labs: Like Cory side I think the anthology is full. Have you taking the 100 Day Challenge Rory? because you can do that at any time.
  9. brian lim: Gazbot is back ~~!!
  10. Darris D. Armstrong: +Serkworks Art Labs Thank you so much! I'll be starting it fresh. So i'll disregard what i've done so far, and start from day 1 again. I'll also let my Instagram and Twitter people know what's going on. Thanks for the clarification Scott!
  11. Pete Marquez: Oh yeah, and Inktober should be actual ink, period.
  12. Serkworks Art Labs: That's an awesome story Victor. I'm glad you took the criticism and set out to improve on what you were lacking at, it's also good to mention that two different editors/artists could give you two entirely different and sometimes contradictory words of advise. It's best to get as many critiques as you can and when you start hearing the same advice over and over again, that's what you really need to work on.
  13. Victor Rodriguez: Really good episode, I'm sorry I missed it live. This was a great topic. I've had two Critiques from top cow years ago. One was from David Whol, he was a bit brutal but honest. The night before seeing him I was making up quick samples which wasn't really good at all, no Surprise David told me to go and take some art classes and to learn how to draw. The second time I got a critique I took a few weeks to do a few pages. I got as much details as I could and it Was Mark Silvestri that reviewed me and it was a 180 experience. He pointed out my flaws and strengths at that time but it was very constructive. In all I appreciated both Critiques even if I was pissed by what David said, but he was right I gave him crappy work and he gave me an honest review. So as long as you learn from what they tell you. Take it all in and keep moving forward.
  14. Serkworks Art Labs: We love having Gaz on the show, so much energy and insight!
  15. Cory Kerr: Rory Herman I’m not in charge of anything, but I think this round is locked down. But you should contact Mike Emeritz to be sure. He’s the boss man
  16. Serkworks Art Labs: Thanks Pete, I agree I think being open to learning is super important. I learn something from almost every art video I watch, some more than others, but I can usually glean something useful. It takes time to build that critical eye, when were younger we don't often see some of the mistakes in out art. There are so many older drawings that I look back at and thought "wow, how did I not see that" I actually think its good that your mom pointed out how to improve your drawing. My mom wold have probably just said "that's great, honey and left it that" don't get me wrong encouragement is great, but even better with a healthy dose of constructive criticism. BTW John Byrne's Alpha Flight was the first comic I ever collected. I have a soft spot for that team. I'd love to see them brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Now that Marvel Studios has X-men , maybe that will happen.
