Often enough, actors going through the audition process are encouraged to "act more ethnic" to get certain parts.

So what happens when the script is flipped and white actors are told to "act whiter" to get a part?

They were looking for actors for a bit of "exotic flair," so directed them to try the scene a little "whiter."
Arturo drew on stuff he's been told in auditions all the time, like exaggerating an accent to sound like he "just jumped the fence."
